A percentage describes a ratio relative to 100, while percentage points measure the absolute difference between two percentages. If an interest rate rises from 3% to 5%, that is an increase of 2 percentage points but a 66.7% relative increase.
Divide the final amount by the percentage expressed as a decimal. If 30% of an unknown number equals 45, then the original number is 45 divided by 0.30, which equals 150.
Multiple discounts are applied sequentially, not added. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is not 30% off. Instead, you pay 80% of the price, then 90% of that result, giving a total discount of 28%.
